Robert Corbin, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and leader of the People’s National Congress/Reform (PNCR) has stated that the PNCR is planning to resume street demonstrations. In the course of Corbin’s remarks he resorted to making threats and implying the use of violence.

Mr Corbin made some very weak excuses about the functioning of Parliament and appears to canvas the view that only confrontation brings desired outcomes.

Those remarks coming so soon after the PNCR’s Congress appears more as an excuse by the PNCR Leader for what his detractors see as weak and ineffectual leadership.

It should be remembered that Mr. Corbin faced a very formidable challenge to his leadership at the last Congress. So strong was it that now many from “Team Alexander” and other observers are making accusations that the party elections were rigged, a charge that has been given credence by the refusal to accept a verification of the delegates.

Having, apparently, crushed the opposition to his leadership Mr Corbin is now engaged in efforts to put himself forward as a leader more militant that his challengers.

His newly proclaimed militancy is also seen as a fig-leaf to divert attention from the PNC’s inner party struggle as Corbin prepares to discipline some of his opponents.

It is rather sad that Mr Corbin is ready to sacrifice the peace and tranquility of our country to his partisan interests even if he has to threaten violence.

The Guyanese people need to condemn this irresponsible behaviour of the PNCR’s leader, and re-affirm continued commitment to the peaceful democratic process and life of our country.
