PRESS STATEMENT

HALT THE CRIME WAVE

The People’s Progressive Party is very concerned at what appears to be another spiral in dangerous criminal activities in our country. A group or groups of heavily armed criminals have carried out massive shoot ups from Georgetown to the Corentyne.

The most recent attack in Agricola on a PGS armoured van has showed how brazen these gangs are becoming once again.

When they attack they appear unhurried. In some instances, they indulge in their carnage of gunfire and terror for more than an hour, like the attack on the home of a Corentyne businessman. In others they carry out such vicious acts close in proximity to the police and army, as was the case in Agricola and only last evening, when criminals took the life of a former presidential guard in Better Hope, East Coast Demerara. The police station is a stone’s throw away.

For quite sometime now we have been fed with lots of excuses about lack of intelligence and capacity on the part of the police force. It is just amazing that after much additional resources have been put into our security forces we are being given these same explanations.

The time has come for our security forces to act decisively and root out these murderous gangs from our midst. We must put an end to criminal terror in our society.
