The People’s Progressive Party extends Best Wishes.
The year 2007 was full of achievements and challenges. Our country advanced in an international environment that is not only complicated by also unfavorable to developing countries in general, but more so to non-oil producing countries.
Despite the huge challenges we can be proud of our achievements.
In the first place Guyana hosted some of the super eight matches of the world cup cricket, reaching very high international standards. Our facilities which includes the stadium, hotel accommodation, infrastructure, including roads among others have been truly impressive.
We have also advanced some other important infrastructure projects during this year. The bridge across the Berbice River has commenced and the bridge across the Tacatu River is nearing completion.
All of these will surely make it possible to increase the economic activities of our people.
The achievements in education and health have really been impressive as well. We continue to register increased passes at CXC, with a wider geographical spread. Thousands of our young people are pursuing higher education in Guyana and abroad, especially in Cuba.
We can say that our youth are being prepared to face the future with confidence.
The delivery of medical services have reached new levels with open heart surgery, cancer ward and also in other fields now available to the Guyanese people at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Surely these are but a few of our achievements that indicate that we are moving ahead as a country. We still have many challenges to overcome in the New Year. Among these is to deal with the rising price of fuel and the increase in food prices due mainly to external factors, especially the use corn to produce fuel in some rice countries.
These pose real problems to our economy. However we can also see now possibilities for our country appearing as food security is becoming a serious global problem.
The PPP is very confident that the Guyanese people will be able to successfully overcome the new issues that have arisen and we would further advance the cause of our people and country.
Once again best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a peaceful, progressive and prosperous New Year.
