The People’s Progressive Party, in observance of the birth and death anniversaries of its late Leader and former President of Guyana, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, has scheduled a number of activities throughout the country. The main activity is a Memorial Service on Friday, March 5 at Babu John, Corentyne, where Dr. Jagan’s body was cremated. Brief addresses will be made by His Excellency, President Bharrat Jagdeo, former President and widow of the late Dr. Jagan, Mrs. Janet Jagan and PPP General Secretary Donald Ramotar. There will also be a number of cultural items. All Guyanese are invited to participate in this and the other activities.
Other activities planned include a “Night of Reflection” sponsored by the Progressive Youth Organisation at Freedom House on March 4; Wreath Laying Ceremonies at Anna Regina, Kopinang and Karasabai; a Cycle Race in Berbice on March 14; a Lecture at the Tain Campus of the University of Guyana; a Photographic Exhibition at Freedom House, New Amsterdam on March 14; a Lecture at the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre on March 22; a Family Fund Day at State House on March 21; a Fitness Walk at the National Park on March 22 among other activities.
The Cheddi Jagan Children’s Fund, which was set up in memory of Dr. Jagan will also be making book donations to schools and other educational institutions in observance of the month. Among the schools to receive books will be the Karasabai Primary School, Kopinang Primary School, Rose Hall Primary School, Novar Primary School, Providence Primary School and Laluni Primary School. This will bring to a total of fifty-one schools, libraries and community centres that have received book donations under the Fund.
The PPP cherishes the memory of its leader and pledges to remain faithful to the high ideals to which Dr. Jagan stood for and dedicated his entire life, namely the creation of a united, free and humane society.
